30 October 2007
An international conference on Corporate Social Responsibility for Moldova will take place on November 8, 2007. Organized by the Eurasia Foundation Moldova Representative Office, the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova and the United Nations Development Programme in Moldova, the conference will focus on CSR as an issue and concept, by acknowledging existing CSR practices in Moldova. Representatives from national and international companies, central and local government, diplomatic and donor communities, as well as media are invited to attend the event.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that encourages organizations to consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on communities, customers, employees, shareholders and the environment in all aspects of operations. This commitment extends beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation, meaning that organizations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large.
According to a UNDP-funded study on CSR in Moldova conducted in 2005 by Expert-grup, CSR practices are common among multinational companies, and to a smaller degree, local companies. Although CSR practices and reporting in Moldova are at an early stage of development, many companies want to become more socially responsible, and some have already started supporting community and social development projects. The conference will encourage corporations, NGOs and media to work together to promote CSR practices among local companies in Moldova. The conference is supported by XEROX Moldova (General Sponsor), Orange Moldova, EuroCreditBank, KPMG Moldova, Coca-Cola, Rompetrol Moldova, BioProtect, Union Fenosa, Glass Container Company.
